Golf’s national championship to return to La Jolla for first time since 2008

March 2014

La Jolla – Torrey Pines Golf Course, a City of San Diego-owned course adjacent to The Lodge at Torrey Pines, will host the 2021 U.S. Open. Golf’s national championship, held annually over Father’s Day weekend, will return to La Jolla for the first time since 2008. The tournament will take place June 17-20, 2021.

“All of us at The Lodge at Torrey Pines couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of golf’s four major championships once again,” said Grace Evans Cherashore, whose family owns and operates The Lodge. “We are proud to be partners with one of the best public courses in America and we can only hope that 2021 will match the excitement that unfolded in 2008.”

The 2008 U.S. Open title was claimed by an injured Tiger Woods, who made a 12-foot birdie putt on the final green in regulation to tie Rocco Mediate and force an 18-hole playoff the following day. Torrey Pines Golf Course also is the site of the annual Farmers Insurance Open, held during the PGA Tour’s West Coast swing.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines lies directly beside the 18th green of the South Course, which will be the only course used for the U.S. Open. (The North Course is only played for the Farmers Insurance Open.)

The Lodge, which opened in 2002 and has been named a AAA Five Diamond resort for each of the 12 years, has partnered with the City of San Diego to give resort guests priority tee times at Torrey Pines Golf Course. The course has been named to several golf publication lists, including a No. 3 ranking among “America’s Best Municipal Courses” by Golfweek Magazine in 2009. The Lodge, meanwhile, won’s 2013 Best in Stay Award as the top-rated hotel in the San Diego market and 2012 Top Golf Resort accolades by Condé Nast Traveler.
